Job Description:
Counselor/Caseworker

1. Qualifications

The Counselor/Caseworker will:

a. Possess at least a Master's Degree from an accredited school in social work or other helping profession;

b. Have a current Iowa license and a minimum of two years supervised experience in the area of families/child welfare services;

c. Be a person of demonstrated maturity, integrity, and sound judgment, capable of establishing a sound social work program and maintaining the same.


2. Duties

The Counselor/Caseworker will:

a. hold weekly sessions with each birthmother individually to help her in her decision-making, planning for the future, and overall well-being; utilizing biblically based curriculum such as the Baby & Me series from Loving & Caring;

b. develop a care plan for each resident, containing goals and objectives with projected dates of accomplishment and shall involve the resident, the house parents, family, referring agency, if relevant, whenever possible, and this plan will be reassessed monthly;

c. coordinate monthly conferences with parents/guardians of birthmother when appropriate, and with the houseparents, and work with parents to improve and maintain their relationship with their daughter and to work with her to plan for her future;

d. set up conferences, when appropriate with the birthfather of baby, to help him and the birthmother work through their feelings and plans;

e. help the birthmother with problems that affect her ability to have satisfactory personal relationships, and to develop her ability and capacity for growth;

f. be responsible for career counseling and referrals to agencies and volunteer professionals;

g. review with houseparents on a weekly basis each birthmother's status, progress, and family situation and update care plan as needed;

h. establish and maintain working relationships between social service agencies, birthmothers, and RH; maintain continuing relationships with referring agencies and specific workers involved with the birthmother during her stay at the RH home;

i. make appropriate referrals to and maintain continuing relationships with community resources and referring agency, if appropriate, to provide services needed by the birthmother and her parents;

j. update and maintain the birthmother's file;

k. maintain and develop the counseling program;

l. work with Executive Director in initial assessment, screening and decisions prior to admission;

m. in concert with the houseparents, monitor and record daily behaviors and any concerns;

n. Refer for appropriate psychological treatment as deemed necessary;

o. Agree with and sign the Ruth Harbor Statement of Faith.
