A Ship Wasn't Built for the Harbor

The real test of Ruth Harbor's effectiveness happens when a mom graduates from our program. The challenges hit hard: single parenting, full-time work, managing childcare — all compounded by long-term emotional and mental health wounds that don't disappear with a diploma. There's a saying that captures it well: "A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for." Ruth Harbor is a place for moms to heal, regain confidence and self-worth, and learn the skills needed to be a good mother. But God made every mom and child for something more — a safe, secure, nurturing home. And that is exactly what we are walking alongside her to build.

That vision is what shapes everything we do. And in 2026, it is shaping five specific priorities guiding our work this year.

Built to Last—We are strengthening the stability and sustainability of our residential program — building a structure that supports both residents and staff in healthy, lasting ways, so that care is consistent and not dependent on any one person.

The Pathway Forward—We are deepening the personal growth journey for each resident. Breaking the cycle of generational poverty requires more than meeting immediate needs. A mom must develop the skills, habits, and confidence to provide a safe, stable, nurturing home for her child — and we are refining how we walk alongside her in that process.

Beyond the Front Door—The journey doesn't end when a resident leaves. In many ways, that is when the real test begins. We are building a stronger continuum of support for our graduates — guidance, encouragement, and practical help as they step into life on their own.

A Clearer Voice—As Ruth Harbor grows, it becomes increasingly important to clearly communicate who we are and why it matters. This includes improving how we share stories, report outcomes, and help our community develop a deeper understanding of childhood trauma and its lasting impact on the women we serve.

Foundations for the Future—We are investing in leadership development, broadening our base of support, and ensuring Ruth Harbor is positioned to serve faithfully for years to come. This work is often unseen — but it is essential.

Each of these priorities reflects a commitment to steward this ministry well. Together, they form a picture of where we believe God is leading Ruth Harbor in this season.

In May, we will share more in our Spring Impact Report — a closer look at how these objectives are taking shape and the lives being transformed along the way. Until then, we invite you to walk with us in prayer and anticipation, trusting that the same God who has been faithful in the past will continue to guide the path ahead.

A ship wasn't built for the harbor, and neither were these moms. Thank you for helping us send them out strong.
